About the Role:
Mercor is partnering with a leading AI research lab to engage experienced patent and compliance attorneys to help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems on specialized legal reasoning. You'll author realistic scenarios and review AI-generated outputs across patent
prosecution/litigation and regulatory compliance, ensuring they reflect how practitioners actually work. Fully remote, flexible hours, project-based.
Key Responsibilities:
- Author tasks and scenarios drawn from real patent and compliance workflows (e.g., patent drafting and prosecution, claim construction, invalidity/IPR analysis, FTO opinions; regulatory filings, AML/BSA, OFAC, FCPA, HIPAA, FDA, GDPR/CCPA, export controls)
- Review and grade AI responses for legal accuracy, sound reasoning, and adherence to professional standards
- Produce model "golden answer" responses and detailed rationale to improve model training
- Flag ambiguity, risk, and edge cases the way a practicing attorney would
Ideal Qualifications:
- 3+ years of professional experience in patent law and/or regulatory compliance (law firm, in-house, regulator, or agency)
- J.D. (or LL.B./LL.M. equivalent); strong candidates often hold degrees from leading US/UK/Canada law schools
- Active or inactive bar admission in a U.S., U.K., or Canadian jurisdiction and/or USPTO/CIPO/UKIPO registration in good standing
- Patent track: registered patent attorney/agent; technical background (engineering, CS, life sciences, chemistry) strongly preferred
- Compliance track: hands-on experience with one or more of AML/BSA, OFAC, FCPA, HIPAA, FDA, GDPR/CCPA, or export control regimes; CIPP/CFE/CAMS a plus
- Excellent written communication and the ability to articulate complex legal reasoning clearly
